If you think seniors are stubborn and perhaps too jaded to dream big, you probably have to think again after listening to Cindy's experiences. If you think seniors are stubborn and perhaps too jaded to dream big, you probably have to think again after listening to Cindy’s experiences. A Youth Corps Singapore volunteer with the Eldercare Cluster, Cindy hopes to break down age stereotypes that youth and seniors may form about each other.

Sharing an exchange she had with a senior, she said, “I met an elderly who dreamt of being an actor during a digital learning workshop I volunteered for. Though he never had the chance to chase his dream when he was younger, he gave it a shot to audition for roles after his retirement. He actually landed parts in a few advertisements! This is proof that we are never too old to dream.”

While she faces challenges when communicating with dialect-speaking seniors, Cindy does not let language barriers stand in her way. Other than picking up dialects bit by bit, she has honed her ability to read non-verbal cues and body language as a way of understanding the elderly’s expressions. The 21-year-old also demonstrates great patience in lending her listening ears to the seniors she works with – something she would gladly do as she enjoys their life stories.

Eager to take her volunteering efforts to the next level, Cindy saw the Youth Corps Leaders Programme as a key platform to expand her impact and make a meaningful difference in the community. The programme's comprehensive and hands-on approach appealed to her, providing her with valuable insights and experiences to develop innovative strategies in addressing community issues. The programme offered Cindy a unique opportunity to enhance her skills as a youth leader and further her passion for community service. By joining the programme, Cindy aimed to not only grow as a leader but also inspire and motivate others to join the cause, creating a ripple effect of positive change around her.
